The Past, Present, and Future of Natalie Jane
On October 23, °1824 held a press conference with up-and-coming pop sensation Natalie Jane, where she discussed the past, present, and bright future of her creative endeavors. A Jersey native herself, 20-year-old Jane has ingeniously used social media, namely TikTok, where she has nearly 10 million followers, to advance her career as a singer-songwriter. She frequently shares videos of her singing to her own songs and others, as well as simple videos that help her fans get a sense of what Jane is like behind the scenes. Freshly off the heels of her latest EP, Sick to My Stomach, Jane had quite a bit of insight to share with the publications in attendance.
Jane began her career while still in high school, releasing music independently and promoting through social media until her work began to pick up steam. She cited using social media to inspire many of her songs, sharing that she loves to tell other people’s stories that they share online to inspire her work. She brings these ideas into the studio along with an inspiration for the sound, and magic is made. For example, Jane shared how a song on her newest EP, “Tattoos”, came out of a particularly difficult session, and the lyrics came to her while taking a break from trying to record.
Her unique vocal style mixed with the eclectic nature of her instrumentals has led Jane to have a reputation of a diverse yet concise sonic landscape. Her sounds span from those reminiscent of bubblegum pop to acoustic folk, all of it tied together by Jane’s impressive vocal range. Natalie shared with the publications that she is currently in the studio, and that her sound is still evolving. She claims to be taking a lot of inspiration this time around from European dance music, but it is always changing. “I don’t know what I’m gonna be doing in 2 or 3 years from now,” Jane shared with a smile. She also cited Bishop Briggs, Labyrinth, and Billie Eilish as a huge inspiration, saying of Eilish “she does whatever she wants.”
Jane also had the opportunity to share some of the inspiration and ideas behind many of the EP’s tracks. “Yucky”, a song with a bubblegum hook for a chorus and an inventive music video, was a big topic of conversation. “The whole idea is I hate who I become when I’m in love.” The video, which features Jane burying a blonde version of herself, was inspired from multiple of Jane’s relationships. “Can I See You Tonight”, another track on the EP, was inspired by another toxic relationship Jane once found herself in. She found a positive way to look at the situation, which she has done with many of her tracks. “You can turn something toxic and terrible into something fun.” Finally, she said “June”, her favorite track on the EP, was partially inspired by her high school boyfriend and other people’s videos of simple acts of love.
Natalie Jane is set to embark on her first three-continent tour in January, where she will finally be visiting Australia, along with Europe and the United States. She spoke very highly of touring, saying that her fans (who she lovingly calls the “Twisted Tummy Club”) make touring feel like “a room full of love” and “a room full of people who want to see you succeed.” She is bringing live instruments and full production with her on every leg of this tour, which she was the most excited about. In the United States, she had no production on stage, and in Europe, she did not have live instruments, so she was thrilled to share her full live vision with her fans everywhere.
You can connect with Natalie Jane on all social platforms including TikTok, Instagram, and X, and starting on January 21, 2025, she will be on tour through the United States to promote the Sick to My Stomach EP, available on all streaming platforms.
