Valentine’s Day Open Mic Night Highlights

This week, Blue Hawk Records hosted one of their many anticipated events: BHR’s annual Valentine’s Open Mic Night <3 at the Great Hall. With such impressive acoustics, a talented group of students, and Valentine’s season being among us, it was nothing short of an incredible time! It’s only right that we address some of the best moments, whether you’re reminiscing on the night or want to know what you missed.

“Stealin’ My Heart Away” Live

We’re starting out strong with this one. I knew for a fact the rest of the night would be incredible after hearing “Stealing My Heart Away” live for the first time ever. Jill Bernstein, President of The Music Alliance, wrote this banger that can be found on Blue Hawk Records’ Exit 22. Thank you Jill for blessing our ears!

Abby’s Friendship Bracelets

When not emceeing, Abby spent a good portion of the night making friendship bracelets to sell on behalf of Blue Hawk Records. She did a great job making them and they are $5. NO discounts! Abby takes her work very seriously.

Our Guitar Man

If you saw the phrase ‘guitar man’ and didn’t immediately think of Nick Garrecht, what are you doing? Our proud Blue Hawk Studio Vice President is known for being the guy that will play guitar for you no matter what the song is. Olivia Rodrigo? Heck yes. Your original? He is so down. One Direction? Say less. At the open mic, Nick played an original piece as well as playing for Abby Garcia, Jill Bernstein, and with the House Band. He is THE guitarist!

Beatles Vibes with the House Band

The House Band had a busy weekend at the JFK Airport, playing at Beatles Fest. They decided to keep the party going by wowing everyone with the classic “Oh! Darling”. Cam Bacon and Joleen Amer on vocals, Nick Garrecht on guitar, and Mike Viani on drums (not the drums but that little box that you sit on and can tap for the rhythm. Can’t you tell I know everything about percussion?) made an incredible performance.

The Cam Bacon x Aidan Cole Collab

The most nerve-wracking thing about an open-mic is how it’s going to end. You want to walk away being impressed, but also with an extra pep in your step. Cam Bacon and Aidan Cole accomplished this with the most unexpected collab ever, singing A-ha’s “Take on Me”. The dancing, the vocals, these guys know how to bring down the house!

The After Hours Moments

Some of the best Blue Hawk moments take place after the event ends. Stay for clean-up, and I promise you it's still a fun time after the doors close. If you’re crazy (like me) and were still at the Great Hall as it neared midnight, you probably witnessed an impromptu rendition of “Little Things”, sung by Nick Garrecht and Abby Garcia. Jeff Mendez popped in on the piano and we were floored. You can always end your night right with a little bit of Blue Hawk!
